Peer Tutoring

Peer Tutoring
Advisor: Mrs. Raycroft, Guidance Office

WHAT IT IS:

Sayville Middle School’s Peer Tutors volunteer during eleventh periods to help other students in a variety of subjects.  Tutors must have a 95  or above grade point average and be a member of the National Junior Honor Society. Peer Tutors are assigned to   students to assist with Math, English, Foreign Language, Social Studies, Science, Resource Room and Language Arts.  Tutors also meet with individual students to help with organization.

HOW TUTORS ARE CHOSEN AND TRAINED:

Shortly after students are inducted into the National Junior Honor Society they are trained to be Peer Tutors. Their training focuses on non-verbal communication, patience and listening skills. They also learn the importance of confidentiality when working with a student. Training takes place over two  11th period sessions.  Once training is complete, peer tutors will meet with their assigned students once a week during a scheduled 11th period.

HOW CAN I GET TUTORED?:

Teachers usually let their students know when tutors are available in eleventh periods.  Any student who believes that they would like to use the services of a peer tutor may speak to their teacher or Guidance Counselor.

Students interested in a peer tutor can  see Mrs. Raycroft in the Guidance Office.  For additional information or to request a Peer Tutor for your child, parents can contact the Guidance Office at 244-6660

Wanted
Peer Tutors and Students who need help with school work.

If you need help in Math, Science, English, Social Studies or any other subject, Peer Tutors are available. Ask your teacher or see Mrs. Raycroft in the Guidance Office

Peer tutors are eighth graders who help students during eleventh period classes who are in need of help with homework, classwork, make-up work, or any other subject work.  Students who want to become a peer tutor, receive training that teaches them listening and communication skills. Peer tutors volunteer their eleventh period time because they want to help other students succeed. Students can sign up to have a peer tutor or they can be one simply by asking a teacher or seeing their Guidance Counselor for details.
