Sayville Middle School Pupil Personnel Services
The Sayville Middle School P.P.S. (Pupil Personnel Services) Department consists of three Guidance Counselors (Mrs. Culkin, Mrs. Raycroft and Mrs. Shuster), School Psychologist (Mrs. Scannell), Social Workers (Mrs. Lloyd-Matthews) and Mrs. Noemi Barczak, the School Nurse (Mrs. Brown), Principal (Mr. Murray) and Assistant Principal (Mr. Decker). The members of PPS meet with students, parents and/or teachers for many different reasons, some of which are listed below: |

- Advisory Group Meetings- At the start of sixth grade, the current Sixth Grade Guidance Counselor meets with all sixth grade students in groups. This informal meeting serves both to familiarize the Guidance Counselor with the students and the students with the Guidance Counselor.
- Awards- Guidance Counselors organizes the awards ceremonies to recognize students for academic and leadership achievements. The Awards Ceremony takes place on the last day of school.
- Behavior Interventions Plans- The School Psychologist devises behavior intervention programs for both general and special education students.

- Committee on Special Education (CSE) Meetings- Ongoing throughout the school year, these meetings are held for individuals with education plans. They are attended by the Special Education Chairperson, the School Psychologist, the student’s parents, General Education and Special Education teacher, the guidance counselor and the Social Worker (if applicable).
- Fifth Grade Orientation- Organized and facilitated by the Guidance Counselors, current seventh grade students are trained to be tour guides for the fifth grade orientation. During the month of June, the fifth graders visit the middle school for this tour given by the seventh grade tour guides.
- Fifth Grade Parent Evening- Serving to ease the transition for students entering the Middle School, this parent workshop takes place one evening in the beginning of June.
- Group Counseling- Lead by the Social Workers, these groups are ongoing throughout the year. Groups include: alcohol /drug education, anger management, assertiveness, Positive Support for students, Values for life, Healthy Choices, decision making, newcomers, self-esteem, social skills, and stress management.
- Health Office- In conjunction with the PPS team, the school nurse provides support in matters regarding students’ health.
- Individual Counseling- The Guidance Counselors, Social Workers, and School Psychologist all provide one on one school-based counseling. This type of counseling encourages students to verbalize their thoughts and feelings. Students are seen for crisis, academic, social, and emotional issues that interfere with their daily school functioning.
- Instructional Support Team (IST) Meetings- When there are academic, emotional, or behavioral concerns about a student, this meeting takes place to discuss how to help that student. An Instructional Support Team (IST) Meeting is attended by an administrator, guidance counselor, school psychologist, social worker, teachers and parents of the student.
- Mentoring- With the Social Worker as coordinator, the P.P.S. team makes recommendations for students to be part of a mentoring program, Middle School faculty serve as mentors.
- Mock Interviews- Members of the PPS Staff and Central Office Administrators act as interviewers. Each eighth grader is individually “interviewed” during Home and Careers class. (Please see Career Counseling on this webpage).
- Parent Conferences- As needed throughout the year, parents meet with their child’s teachers and Guidance Counselor to discuss academic progress and concerns.

- Project Success- Classroom presentations that focus on giving students the keys to success. They learn about effective communication and assertiveness skills, and how to find support systems in their lives. This program is facilitated by the PPS staff.
- Roadshow- 6th grade students are introduced to the entire PPS team through a small group presentation at the beginning of the year.
- Sayville Personal Safety Program- A bullying program coordinated by the Middle School Social Worker and Student Assistance Counselor.
- Scheduling – Guidance counselors meet with students to discuss academic requirements for the upcoming school year.
