8th Grade

The mathematics program in the eighth grade extends computational skills through a problem solving and pre-algebra approach.  New areas of geometry are introduced.  Vocabulary for algebra and geometry is stressed.  To prepare students for the study of algebra and geometry, preparatory procedures are presented throughout the year.  Additional topics include: Probability, Statistics, Graphing, Venn Diagrams, Transformation Geometry and Trigonometry, primary through a problem-solving approach.

Although all students will be prepared to take the 8th Grade Assessment, the degree of that preparation will vary significantly in the two levels of Math 8.  Students assigned to Math 8 without acceleration will have intense preparation for the assessment.  Students who are accelerated will take a new course entitled Integrated Algebra and will have limited preparation for the Math 8 Assessment due to the demands of the algebra regents curriculum.  Integrated Algebra will culminate in a regents examination in June.  New York State requires the use of a graphing calculator for all students enrolled in Integrated Algebra.  A TI-83 Plus is the recommended calculator.

Entry into Honors Mathematics: Geometry

Students will be scheduled for placement in Geometry in 9th grade in late winter of 8th grade.  The initial placement of students will be based on maintaining a 90% test average and teacher recommendation in Integrated Algebra.  All candidates will be reviewed in June to verify the criteria are met and the student receives a grade of 90% or better on the final examination.
