Homework Tips
Here are some helpful hints to help your child successfully complete his/her homework assignments each night.
1. Set up a study area.
To do homework successfully, your child must have a place in which to work. The study area must be well-lit, quiet, and have all necessary supplies (Lee Canter). It should also be located where you can easily check up on your child to offer help, or to keep him/her on task.
2. Arrange a set time to do homework.
By scheduling a daily homework time, you will not only help your child get work done on time, but you can also ensure that homework is done at a time when you are available to help. Homework should not be rushed or interrupted. During daily homework time, all other activities must stop and your child should get to work (Lee Canter).
3. See that your child uses his/her planner.
The first step to successful completion of homework is knowing what to do. To make sure that your child knows all of his/her assignments, they must be written in the homework planner accurately everyday. If it is not, provide a consequence (agreed upon by yourself and your child).
4. Look over completed homework assignments.
Students often focus on getting their homework done, rather than doing it right. By looking over your child's homework you can be sure that he/she has completed all assignments, to the best of his/her ability. Even if homework was finished in school, have your child bring it home to show you.
